The coronavirus pandemic has certainly had an impact on all aspects of urban life. However, one of the most affected sectors is urban economy. Local governments should not only adapt to the current situation, but become that driver of the development which will restart economy in cities.

Participants of the 10th online webinar of UCLG held on April 30, 2020, discussed a contribution that local and regional governments could make to combat unemployment, as well as measures to be taken to ensure the sustainable local economic development.

Executive Director of UN-Habitat Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Secretary General of UCLG Emilia Saiz, Mayor of Seville (Spain) Juan Espadas Cejas, Mayor of Chefchaouen (Morocco) Mohamed Sefiani, Mayor of Panchgani (India) Laxmi Karhadkar and others took part in this online conference.

UCLG-Eurasia was represented by Vice-Mayor of Nizhnekamsk Elvira Dolotkazina, Secretary General Rasikh Sagitov, Head of the Department of External Economic Relations of the Ufa Administration Anzhelika Zhelnova, Chief Specialist of the Department of External Relations and Investment Projects Implementation of the Yakutsk Administration Zinaida Nikolaeva, etc.

Vice-Mayor of Nizhnekamsk Elvira Dolotkazina presented measures being taken in the city to support small and medium-sized businesses. ‘We are doing our best to adapt to the current situation. There is the Centre for the Support and Development of Entrepreneurship in our city. Online conferences are held for representatives of the business. Besides, the municipality of Nizhnekamsk has made a request to owners of large trade areas to reduce a rental fee or to fully exempt lessees from the payment. Many businessmen have responded to our request and made concessions,’ Elvira Dolotkazina highlighted.

Over 250 representatives of local and regional governments across the world took part in this webinar. As a reminder, UCLG launched a series of online webinars at the end of March 2020, as a response to the crisis caused by the coronavirus outbreak all over the globe. Earlier, online conferences dedicated to the issues of culture, finance, migration, information technology development, etc. took place.
