Dialogue Between Mayors and Ministers: Strengthening Coordination to Combat Climate Change

The first day of the UCLG Executive Bureau meetings has come to an end. It has focused mainly on the issues of climate change. The participants of this online event, among whom have been mayors and ministers, have tried to strike a balance between central and local governments’ activities to combat climate change.

President of UCLG Mohamed Boudra, Executive Director of UN-Habitat Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Minister for the Environment, Land and Sea Protection of Italy Sergio Costa, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Mayor of Durban (South Africa) Mxolisi Kaunda, Mayor of Soria (Spain) Carlos Martines Minguez and others have shared their vision of the issue of ecological recovery in the context of the COVID-19 crisis.

In his statement, Mayor of Kazan, President of UCLG-Eurasia Ilsur Metshin has referred to the year of 2015 when the Paris Agreement on Climate Change supported by many national and local governments was signed. “Today, I am more than ever convinced that the Paris Agreement can and should be a tool capable to consolidate efforts to combat the causes of climate change and stop the growth of greenhouse gas emissions. We share with the entire world community the goals and responsibility for climate protection,” Ilsur Metshin said.

First Deputy Chairman of the State Assembly of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Aleksandr Zhirkov has delivered a speech on the impact of climate change on the life of regions in permafrost: “We, the Russians, like all people on the planet, are interested in preserving a stable condition of the Earth, in which climate plays a decisive role. Due to the low population density and a particular mindset of local citizens keeping ancient traditions of careful attitude to nature alive, we belong to the world regions with the least damage to the environment.” Aleksandr Zhirkov has congratulated citizens of the Republic of Tatarstan on the celebration of the 100th anniversary as well.

UCLG-Eurasia was represented by Secretary General Rasikh Sagitov, Chairman of the Stavropol City Duma Georgy Kolyagin, Mayor of Izhevsk Oleg Bekmemetyev, Vice-Mayor of Osh (Kyrgyzstan) Zhasur Azimov, Mayor of Rostov-on-Don Zinaida Neyarokhina, Mayor of Turkestan (Kazakhstan) Rashid Ayupov, Mayor of Yekaterinburg Aleksandr Vysokinsky, First Deputy Chairman of the Grozny City Duma Magomed-Ali Turaev and others.
