Experts summed up the outcomes of the Rating of Cities’ International Activity. The results were announced at the award ceremony for the winners of the Rating on February 28, 2020, during the annual UCLG Retreat in Tangier, Morocco.
According to the results of the research, the city of Bishkek, the Kyrgyz Republic, became the absolute leader of the Rating, having scored the highest total of points. Bishkek as the absolute leader of the Rating was granted the UCLG-Eurasia Award in the amount of $10,000. This money should be aimed at developing and strengthening the international activity.
With a minimum gap, the Turkish city of Izmir ranked second in the Rating. It should be reminded that for the first time UCLG-MEWA joined the Research of Cities’ International Activity in 2019, thus, having expanded the geography of the Research. The Russian city of Khabarovsk ranked third in the common Rating.
The small rating was compiled separately. It allows to rank cities on the basis of their classification according to the population.
The city of Magas (Russia) became the leader among small cities (with population up to 19 999 people). Bolgar (Russia) took the second place, and Beit Jala (Palestine) ranked third.
Among medium-sized cities (20 000- 99 999 people), Comrat (Gagauzia, Moldova) is most actively developing international relations. Magadan and Bugulma (Russia) are catching up and ranked second and third correspondingly.
Among large cities (100 000 - 499 999 people), Mytishchi (Russia) ranked first, Mogilev (Belarus) took the second place, and Stavropol (Russia) ranked third.
Khabarovsk, Ulyanovsk and Tomsk represent the top three cities among the largest cities (500 000 - 999 999 people). Khabarovsk ranked first, Ulyanovsk took the second place, and Tomsk ranked third.
Among the cities with a population of more than 1 million people, the city of Bishkek (the Kyrgyz Republic) became the leader. The city of Izmir (Turkey) ranked second, and Kazan (Russia) is in the third place.
According to Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia Rasikh Sagitov: “The aim of the Research is to analyze the work of local governments towards the development of international relations and to define which cities do it most effectively. Its objective consists not only in ranking the municipalities’ international activity, but in preparing the detailed analysis of the Rating’s outcomes”.
It is important to note that this year the expert commission on stocktaking the results of the Rating of Cities’ International Activity decided to prepare the analysis of the Rating’s outcomes and to develop recommendations. The analysis will be conducted by the head of the Department of Sociology, Political Studies and Science of Law, PhD in politics, Professor Nail Mukharyamov.
About 80 cities from Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Moldova and Palestine took part in the Research.
