In 2020, based on the results of a large-scale research, the outcomes of the Rating of Cities’ International Activity have been summed up. This is an initiative of UCLG-Eurasia, in which about 80 cities of Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Moldova and Palestine took part.

Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia Rasikh Sagitov visited Magadan on November 27, 2020, and granted Mayor of the city Yury Grishan an award for the second place in the Rating among medium-sized cities.

“It is a great honor for me to come here to award you a well-deserved diploma. By the decision of the commission, Magadan has ranked second among the cities with an average population from 20,000 to 99,999 people. This time the rating has been conducted not only in Eurasia; other countries have started to join it as well. What is commendable for Magadan – the city has managed to take such a high place thanks to the activities of the municipal governments. In other cities there are consulates and embassies, the large flow of international students that have a positive impact on the rating, while Magadan has received such a high position thanks to the activities of local governments. We are proud that Magadan is a member of our organization,” Rasikh Sagitov noted presenting the award.

The research conducted by UCLG-Eurasia includes not only ranking of cities. Its objective is to define how cities are working towards the development of international relations and what cities are doing it better. Besides, the main focus is made on activities of local governments. Based on the analysis the information on the most efficient/ inefficient and widespread methods to enhance international recognition is provided.

“Magadan is a member of different organizations uniting cities according to different principles. Among them are the Union of Arctic and Extreme North Cities, Association of Cities of Siberia and Far East. At the same time we are members of the Eurasia Regional Section of the United Cities and Local Governments World Organization. I am glad to meet Mr.Rasikh Sagitov who has been running the organization for many years and express him gratitude for such a high assessment of our activity,” Mayor of Magadan Yury Grishan said.
