On March 29, 2021, the first online learning seminar on the Zoom platform dedicated to the topic “Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals” was held by UCLG-Eurasia. The program of the seminar was based on the training modules developed by the UCLG World Organization, the United Nations Development Program and UN-Habitat.

The seminar was aimed at raising awareness of global agendas and the Sustainable Development Goals among local governments. The event was attended by representatives of the cities of Yekaterinburg, Volgograd, Krasnoyarsk, Perm, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Stavropol, Ulyanovsk, Ufa, Yakutsk and Bolgar.

The online seminar was opened by Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia Rasikh Sagitov who emphasized the importance and role of local and regional governments in achieving the SDGs on the ground and solving global problems. “Local governments in their daily activities make a significant contribution to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. According to UCLG estimates, 65% of the SDGs cannot be implemented without the participation of local governments,” Rasikh Sagitov noted.

“The 2030 Agenda is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It emphasizes that the eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development,” said Projects Coordinator of UCLG-Eurasia Tansylu Nurieva, who spoke next. She highlighted the main principles of the SDGs as well. All goals are universal, complex, and take into account the interests of people.

An online survey was conducted among the seminar participants, which showed that most of them are familiar with the Sustainable Development Goals. Participants were able to select the SDGs with the highest priority for their cities. SDG 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth” scored the highest percentage.

Development Director of UCLG-Eurasia Saida Zagidullina presented projects of cities in the Eurasia region in the field of localization of the Sustainable Development Goals. Among them are the annual Strategic Development Forum "Cities of Russia 2030", which is held in Yekaterinburg; the International Forum of Public Diplomacy "Dialogue on the Volga: Peace and Mutual Understanding in the XXI Century" organized by the city of Volgograd; the Rostov-on-Don project called "New Rostov" aimed at the development of small and medium-sized businesses in the city; the initiative of Perm "Golden Reserve" and many others. Each project has been aligned with specific Sustainable Development Goals.

Projects Coordinator of UCLG-Eurasia Tansylu Nurieva spoke about the activities of UCLG-Eurasia on the implementation of global agendas noting that the regional section took part in the preparation of the Voluntary National Review of the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Russia.
