UCLG-Eurasia takes part in online debates dedicated to the discussion of analytical findings of the UN on policies of cities of the world in the context of the spread of COVID-19.
The event took place on July 28, 2020, under the auspices of Secretary-General of the UN Antonio Guterres, President of UCLG Mohamed Boudra and Executive Director of UN-Habitat Maimunah Mohd Sharid. Participants of this event included representatives of international organizations and municipalities of different countries.
The main theme of this discussion was a crucial role of local governments in crisis management as well as preparation for future challenges of the pandemic. According to participants, it is necessary to restore cities after the pandemic, and transform them into more sustainable, innovative, integrated and united ones.
Vice-Mayor of Kazan Evgenia Lodvigova highlighted the special role of local governments that found themselves on the front line responding to COVID-19. She shared experience of Kazan in addressing urban issues, and focused participants’ attention on the need for joint actions, mutual support and solidarity that are an important step towards crisis resolution.
All recommendations of the speakers will be taken into account in the final version of analytical findings on policies of cities of the world in the context of the COVID-19. These materials have been developed by representatives of the major international organizations – UN-Habitat, UNICEF, WHO and others, regional economic commissions and representatives of local governments.
