UCLG is in the process of producing a 2020 Rome Charter on cultural rights. The first draft of the Charter was presented by Luca Bergamo, Vice-Mayor of Rome and Vice-President of the UCLG Culture Committee on 29 May 2020 to the UCLG Executive Bureau. The preparatory work for the text had been initiated a few months ago, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, as “a local/global process of reflection on people’s participation in cultural life”.
The Charter is aligned with the UCLG Presidency Decalogue for the COVID-19 aftermath, launched on 22 April 2020, which identifies culture as one of the key priorities to guide the advocacy of UCLG in the coming years, as an “antidote for the secondary effects” of the crisis.
The text is a draft resulting from a process of consultation that has involved an initial group of 22 cities, 15 networks and 47 experts from every continent.
On October 1-3, 2020, the Online Conference on Rome Charter 2020 will take place. Three days of debates, international interventions and dialogues dedicated to discuss the development of sustainable cities and communities through participation in culture. Eleven sessions online, all translated in English and in Italian, some of them held in Spanish and French. You can register before September 28th through this link.
