UCLG has concluded a series of live learning webinars with the participation of UN-Habitat and Metropolis with the conversation on food security. The webinar dedicated to the topic “Food Systems: Lessons from the Pandemic” took place on July 2, 2020, having gathered over 100 representatives of local and regional governments from all over the world.

Participants of this webinar included Secretary General of UCLG Emilia Saiz, Regional Director of ICLEI in Africa Kobie Brand, Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia Rasikh Sagitov, Director of the Department of Food and Social Nutrition of Kazan Rima Mukhamedshina, Head of the Department of International and Intermunicipal Relations of the Kazan Municipality Ruslan Galiakhmetov, representatives of Xi’an (China), Milan (Italy), Pariaman (Indonesia), etc.

Participants discussed how the pandemic has affected the agricultural production, how local governments provide the most vulnerable segments of the population with food packs, what measures are to be taken to ensure fair access to food products as well as many other issues.

Director of the Department of Food and Social Nutrition of Kazan Rima Mukhamedshina delivered a speech on the work of the Department and the implementation of the “Healthy Nutrition for Children” programme. “Today, the Food Department arranges nutrition for 260,000 people per day. This includes 250 schools, 550 kindergartens, and 9 major hospitals of Kazan. The Department is an enterprise keeping the city functioning and supporting the population, and it continues carrying out its activities during the pandemic as well,” Rima Mukhamedshina highlighted.
