Preparation for Eurasia Local Governments Congress was Discussed in the City of Cheboksary

On June 7 the Secretariat of UCLG Eurasia met with the officials of the city of Cheboksary. The main topic of discussion was the organization and holding of Eurasia Local Governments Congress under the theme "Towards Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals", which will be held in Cheboksary this autumn. Over one hundred mayors and representatives of Eurasian cities will take part in the congress.

The city of Cheboksary has been chosen as the place for holding the congress according to the results of the Cities’ International Activity Research conducted by UCLG Eurasia and the proposal of the UCLG Committee on Culture.

“Cheboksary is a beautiful and comfortable city, where the intermunicipal experience exchange projects are being successfully implemented. Moreover, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, UN Under-Secretary-General, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, will take part in the congress. It will be the first visit to Russia for her”, stressed Rasikh Sagitov, Secretary General of UCLG Eurasia.

As a part of the congress, there will the Assembly of the UCLG Eurasian Section, a meeting of the Association of the Volga Region Cities, a seminar of the Committee on Culture and a training seminar on the localization of SDGs. “Culture is a main index of living standards, and increasing them is the main goal of municipality sustainable development”, said Yevgeny Kadyshev, Head of the city of Cheboksary. 

Alla Salaeva, Deputy Head of the Cheboksary Administration for Social Affairs, noted that this is the real opportunity to present the cultural and touristic potential of the city, demonstrate practical examples of the "Healthy Cities" movement, and discuss the problem of transport reform, which is topical for all the major cities of the Volga region. "The experience of Kazan, where many of the mechanisms of sustainable development have been implemented already, will be the most interesting for the participants”, she said.

During the meeting, the guests were presented the concept of the congress. The participants discussed the place, where the congress will be held, and other organizational issues. Then the delegation together with the deputies of the city administration visited conference halls, hotels and watched the city tour route.

Summarizing the outcome of the meeting, Alexei Ladykov, Head of City Administration, announced that the organizing committee is proceeding with detailed work. Together with Rasikh Sagitov, he signed an agreement to determine the mutual responsibilities of the parties and the distribution of tasks related to the holding of this event. "Cheboksary has the honorable mission of organizing the Eurasia Local Governments Congress and launching cultural and historical events devoted to the anniversary of the capital of Chuvashia. This is a significant event for us and for the whole Volga region. We will try to hold it at the highest level", - said Alexei Ladykov.
