On October 8, 2020, the joint consultation of the United Nations and UCLG took place in commemoration to the UN 75th Anniversary. Upon request of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, UCLG has prepared the report on how local governments see the future of our planet in 25 years.
On behalf of local and regional governments of the Eurasian region, Vice-Mayor of Ufa Alina Suleimanova took the floor. In her speech she noted that nowadays the number of global challenges is growing around the world, and their addressing requires the consolidation of efforts at all levels. “To achieve the sustainable future we and our colleagues from Eurasia consider that it is necessary to create a new model of global governance, where local governments take active part in the global decision-making process. Global agreements and agendas should be developed in partnership with local governments. There the role, powers and measures to support local governments should be identified,” Alina Suleimanova highlighted in her speech. She also thanked President of UCLG-Eurasia, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin and UCLG President Mohamed Boudra for the effective promotion of the interests of local and regional governments.
Among the participants of the consultation were Under-Secretary-General of UN and Special Adviser on Preparations for the Commemoration of the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of the United Nations Fabrizio Hochschild, Executive Director of UN-Habitat Maimunah Mohd-Sharif, UCLG Secretary General Emilia Saiz, and Mayors and Ministers from all over the world.
