Vice-President of the UCLG World Organization for Eurasia, Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Aysen Nikolaev took part in the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) held from October 31 to November 13, in Glasgow, Scotland.

World leaders agreed to stop global deforestation, committed to reduce methane emissions and decided to diminish coal use for power generation. The Conference resulted in the adoption of the Glasgow Climate Pact.

For the purpose of the multilevel dialogue and involvement of subnational governments in the decision-making processes in the field of climate, on November 11, at the COP26, Local and Regional Governments’ Day organized with the facilitation of UCLG took place. During this event, participants highlighted that climate change and the pandemic have proved the fragility of existing systems. In this regard, there is a growing need to improve resilience and readiness for emergency situations.

Aysen Nikolaev emphasized the interconnection of climate change with forest fires that occur in the region and the world in catastrophic proportions. Today, in Yakutia, the system of forests protection from fires is being developed. It is planned to create tree nurseries and greenhouse complexes to cultivate seedlings with root-balled tree system.

“We as humanity are together causing climate problems, therefore we are to solve them together. I call on my colleagues to work jointly and in concert”, Head of Yakutia addressed the participants of the Conference.

In addition, Aysen Nikolaev announced the World Climate and Permafrost Melting Summit to be held in Yakutia in 2023.

“We expect that initiatives of Yakutia to combat consequences of climate change will correlate with UCLG’s activities, and we hope that through such platforms organized by UCLG and Global Taskforce, these initiatives will attract wide international attention and engagement”, Aysen Nikolaev noted.

Along with Aysen Nikolaev, Mayor of Esteban Echeverria (Argentina) Fernando Gray, Deputy Mayor of Paris (France) Arnaud Ngatcha, Mayor of Soest Rob Metz, Mayor of Bani Naim Al Khalil (Palestine) Ali Manasra, Head of the UN Environment Programme Martina Otto, Director-General of the Secretariat of New Taipei Government Chingyu Yao, and Director of Cities Alliance Greg Munro took the floor during the event.
