President of UCLG-Eurasia, Mayor of Kazan, President of UNACLA Ilsur Metshin took part in the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) that is taking place these days in the city of Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

COP27 became the first platform where parties were engaged in discussing definite objectives to achieve the Paris Agreement.

“In 2015, we together supported the Paris Climate Agreement. At that time, in Paris, we managed to adopt this most important for the whole world community document. I was proud and happy that we, mayors all over the world, are united in our quest to preserve our planet beautiful and safe for future generations. I’m convinced that we all had similar feelings,” Ilsur Metshin noted.

As part of this session, the UCLG World Organization made a focus on discussing the Pact for the Future adopted at the last UCLG World Congress in Daejeon as a way towards the localization of these goals.

“The range of areas, in which we should be active and adamant in our desire for positive changes, is wide,” President of UCLG-Eurasia stressed.

These directions include waste sorting and its use as recyclables, reclamation of large territories, treatment of different types of wastewater, use of green energy, rejection of attributes of a single-use civilization, energy and water saving, creation of green frames of our cities with the use of various plant species, firm adherence to the sustainable development principles and environmental education of children and the youth.

Ilsur Metshin presented a project being implemented in Kazan. The capital of Tatarstan has launched the first Russian thermomechanical silt deposits processing line. Precipitation of sewage is not stored in the silt fields. 70 tons of biofuel having a wide variety of uses is generated from it every day.

“Today, we all need to be adapted to the increased load, another approach to strategic planning and zoning of urban territories, enhancing urban resilience,” Ilsur Metshin addressed the Conference participants concluding his speech.
