World Urban Forum (WUF) was initiated by the UN to study one of the most pressing problems the world is facing: rapid urbanisation and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change, and policies. The first WUF was held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002 and has been held every two years around the world.

Representatives of national, regional, and local governments, academics, business people, community leaders, urban planners will be among thousands of people, who are expected to attend WUF11.

The coronavirus pandemy is a stark reminder that cities should be prepared for dynamic and unpredictable future. COVID-19 clearly revealed existing problems cities are facing and their vulnerability to earthquakes. However, every region and every country saw differences in these problems and vulnerabilities. The future of cities is “multiple” and we should consider these differences as potential strengths, reveal regional differences, study together, and adjust urban models accordingly.

The theme of WUF11, Transforming our Cities for a Better Urban Future, will provide greater insights and clarity on the future of cities based on existing trends, challenges and opportunities, as well as suggest ways cities can be better prepared to address future pandemics and a wide range of other shocks.

Katowice

Katowice is a city in the south of Poland, near Krakow. The population of Katowice is around 350 thousand people, and there are 3 487 000 people living in the agglomeration.

Recently Katowice has become One of Europe’s most bustling urban centres, and a major destination for international conferences. Thanks to wide a range of hotels to meet all budgets and tastes, Katowice is a top destination for business innovation in Europe.

The city was once an industrial centre built around the coal mining and steel manufacturing sectors. Whether it’s a concert at one of our world-class venues, a stroll around an art museum, or a hike in one of our many tree-filled forests or parks, Katowice has something for everyone, - Marcin Krupa, Mayor of Katowice City.
