The first smart city has been built in Turkmenistan. A new administrative center with a population of about 70 thousand people is being built in an area of 950 hectares 30 km southwest of Ashgabat. It is planned to organize a movement of environmentally friendly transport (electric buses and electric cars), smart parking areas, solar panels, wind turbines, etc.
The city has built smart residential buildings controlled via a smartphone, a square with a flagpole, buildings of the municipality, palace of culture, drama theater, library, clinic of infectious diseases, museum, Higher International School of Horse Breeding and Research-Production Horse Breeding Center. Almost 1.5 billion US dollars have been allocated for the implementation of this mega-project launched three years ago.
The new city has been named Arkadag in honor of former Turkmen President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow. The title "Arkadag" is usually translated as a "stronghold, support and hope" or "protector".
