A new technology for wastewater treatment will be used in Astrakhan – transition from use of liquid chlorine to ultraviolet disinfection. The opening of a new station was held at the southern waste treatment plants. The Mayor of Astrakhan Mikhail Stolyarov together with the director of «Astrvodokanal» launched the uprated facility.

«We keep solving the problem of wastewater treatment. The launch of the first ultraviolet disinfection station will not only deliver high quality water purification, but will also help save money of the company. This is a major step forward in the modernization of wastewater treatment facilities which in future will be fully equipped in accordance with modern technologies», - said Mikhail Stolyarov at the opening. The station was opened a year after the construction had begun. Municipal enterprise had spent about 80 million rubles. The main purpose of city authorities is to maintain health care of Astrakhan residents and improve the ecological condition of waters of Astrakhan. The method of ultraviolet cleaning is absolutely harmless to the environment. Installation of modern equipment and giving up liquid chlorine disinfection have made South wastewater treatment plants absolutely safe, 5-6 times reducing the sanitary protection zone.

This method has been used in foreign countries and Russian cities for a long time. The new station in Astrakhan will serve more than 100,000 residents.
