Ekaterinburg: pay for public transport via your mobile

The administration of the city of Ekaterinburg is going to launch another high-tech project in the summer of 2012 – public transport fare system via mobile phones.

Experts have developed software that allows you to pay the fare via validators or free-standing payment terminals. The system will cover over 1600 units of public transport and all metro stations.

The project is supported by one of the cellular service providers and is perfectly integrated into the “EKARTA” system – a citywide electronic fare collection infrastructure.

To gain access to the service the user must insert a SIM-card with NFC-chip under the back cover of his phone. Then to buy a ticket it is necessary to put the phone against the reader located at the ticket barrier or conductor`s mobile terminal (validator). Then the fare is written down from the balance of the cell phone.

Implementation of the project　will enhance the　comfort of　using the services　of public transport　for residents and visitors　of Ekaterinburg.

The same system is used in Kazan.
