The citizens and visitors of the Armenian capital celebrated the traditional Day of the City on October 11-12, 2014. Yerevan was founded in 782 BC and celebrates his birthday on the second Saturday of October. This year he was 2796 years.
In his welcoming speech, the mayor of Taron Margaryan noted, that “Erebuni-Yerevan” is a holiday for all Armenians, as Yerevan – a large house for each of them. This is a unique opportunity to at least mentally return Armenians of the world to native home so that they could see the city, which every year is booming and becoming more beautiful and comfortable.
Activities during the first festive day held on the territory adjacent to the historical and archaeological museum “Erebuni”. There were organized exhibitions of folk art, costumes and culinary dishes, national games, the performance of young musicians of Yerevan and competition of ropewalkers. The day ended with a concert program “The festival in Yerevan...”.
The second day began with a festive parade of watering machines. During the day, in different squares and parks of Yerevan organized events such as the exhibition “Yerevan-ART”, the action of cleaning the monuments of Yerevan, the exhibition of urban development projects “Yerevan sketches”.
The main event of Day of the city – parade – was launched by the municipality of Yerevan, where the procession moved towards the Republic Square. It was attended by 25,000 citizens of Yerevan.
Day of the City was marked by numerous theatrical choreographic and dance performances, as well as a karaoke event “Sing Yerevan” and demonstrations of sailing on Swan Lake. Sports enthusiasts were able to participate in the bike ride, and fans of chess – in chess tournament. Also there were concerts of classical, jazz and rock music.
Gala concert “Yerevan – my home”, rock concert “Yerevan inspires” and youth disco held in the evening at the Republic Square. The Day of the city ended with fireworks.
