On August 23, 2019, the meeting of the Association of Volga Region Cities was held in the city of Kazan. Mayors of Penza, Cheboksary, Izhevsk, Samara, Kirov, Saratov and the other Russian cities took part in the event. Oleg Dovgopol, Mayor of Tiraspol and Dniester, and Albina Ivanova, Chairperson of the Tiraspol City Council, also took part in the event as the guests of honor.

The main topic of the discussion was the progress of the waste management reform. The guests studied the experience of Kazan in the implementing of separate waste collection, got acquainted with the infrastructure facilities and attended the opening ceremony of the WorldSkills World Championship, that is taking place these days in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan.

During the meeting, Iskander Giniyatullin, Deputy Head of the Kazan Executive Committee, described the plans to create a full waste management cycle in Kazan and to develop a culture of separate waste collection and collection of municipal solid waste in Tatarstan. Environmental education of schoolchildren is a very urgent topic in the city. Litter-boxes and street euro containers for separate waste collection are installed in all the Kazan schools, environmental classes are held in schools, social campaigns to collect waste batteries and waste paper are held.

Summing up the meeting, Vladimir Reprintsev, Executive Director of the Association of Volga Region Cities, proposed to continue the exchange of best practices in this field within the frameworks of the association. In addition, it was decided to send proposals on legislative improvement of this activity to the Plenipotentiary of the President of Russia in the Volga Federal District and to the heads of the relevant committees of the State Duma of Russia and of the Federation Council.
