On June 26, the Government of the Russian Federation officially approved the holding of the first-ever Games of the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Russia. Competitions will be held on August 20-27, 2020 in Kazan.
“To be frankly, the choice was obvious – Kazan is the sports capital of Russia, in our city one can hold competitions on the basis of the existing infrastructure such as sports facilities and the Universiade Village. We also plan to use the Kazan Expo. We are now starting a systematic preparation for the event. After the Games in Kazan, the event will become traditional and will be held every 2 years in the CIS countries”, - Vladimir Leonov, Minister of Sport of the Republic of Tatarstan, said.
Among the participants will be the sportsmen from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine. In addition, the organizing committee may invite other countries to participate.
It is expected that Kazan will host more than 2,000 athletes and 600 officials. Athletes will compete in judo, beach volleyball, boxing, chess, fencing, karate, etc.
In the frameworks of the Games the business program “Forum of the CIS – the territory of sport” is planned, as well as an extensive cultural and entertainment program.
