Only a week remains to take part in voting for the main tree of Europe of 2019. Russia is represented in the international competition by a 248-year-old “Abramtsevskiy Oak”, growing in the village of Abramtsevo (Sergievo-Posadsky district, Moscow region). The main goal of the competition is to involve citizens into environmental and local heritage protection.
In the frameworks of the competition each country presents the tree with the most interesting history. “Abramtsevskiy Oak” has been an inspiration for many prominent figures of Russian culture such as Nikolay Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Ilya Repin, Victor Vasnetsov, Isaac Levitan, Vasily Surikov, Vasily Polenov.
15 age-old trees from 15 European countries are represented at the competition. Among the competitors of the Russian oak are “linden of freedom” from the Czech Republic, “tree-bird” from France, “oak-favorite” from the Netherlands and the tree “Nelli” from Leeds, United Kingdom.
You may vote for the Russian tree on the contest website. When voting, you must select two candidate trees. Voting for the European tree-2019 will last until February 28. Results will be announced on March 19 during the awards ceremony in Brussels.
