On May 16 Nizhny Novgorod hosted a meeting of the Association of Towns of the Volga Region. Heads of cities, heads of administrations of the cities of Volgograd, Yoshkar-Ola, Kirov, Penza, Samara, Saransk, Saratov, Ulyanovsk, Cheboksary, as well as leaders of national and international organizations, municipalities and local governments, representatives of the State Duma and Federal Assembly of Russian Federation have attended the meeting in Nizhny Novgorod. Rasikh K. Sagitov attended the meeting as the representative of the city of Kazan and the head of the Eurasian section UCLG.
The issues of environmental activities of the members of the Association of Towns of The Volga Region, tasks in the field of ecology, issues of development of inbound and domestic tourism have been discussed at the meeting. Members of the Board also discussed the experience of cities of the Volga region of introducing modern European system of collection and disposal of solid waste and protection of water facilities in the cities. Work plan of the Association for 2012 has been approved at the meeting as well.
In addition, elections to the Board of the Association were held at the meeting. The mayor of Ulyanovsk M.Bespalova and the head of the city of Cheboksary L.Cherkasov were elected members of the Board. L.Cherkesov was also elected vice-president of the Association
