The Technical Committee of Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation gathered in Guangzhou between 25 and 27 September, 2014, to select outstanding and deserving initiatives from the 259 submissions received for the Award. Rostov-on-Don was included in the list of the 45 best cities.

Co-hosted by UCLG, Metropolis, and Guangzhou Municipal Government, the 2nd Guangzhou Award aims to reward innovations to improve the socio-economic environments in cities and regions, promote sustainability, and hence advance the livelihood of their citizens.

The Guangzhou Award is presented every two years and will be granted to up to 5 winners. Each of the winners will be awarded with USD 20 000, apart from a trophy and a certificate.

Following three days of intensive discussions, the Award’s Technical Committee identified 45 deserving initiatives, 15 of which were further chosen to make up the final shortlist of entries, based on their ability to enhance the implementation of sustainable urban development through inspiration and knowledge sharing.

The 15 cities that made the shortlist are: Abu Dhabi (UAE), Antioquia (Colombia), Boston (USA), Bristol (Great Britain), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Christchurch (New Zealand), Dakar (Senegal), Eskisehir (Turkey), Gwangju (South Korea), Hamburg (Germany), Hangzhou (China), Jakarta (Indonesia), Linköping (Sweden), Melbourne (Australia) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

The following cities, members of the Eurasian section of UCLG, that have applied for the Award this year are: Vladikavkaz, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Rostov-on-Don, Stavropol and Cheboksary. Innovation of Rostov-on-Don was the most successful, whereby it was in the list of 45 best cities worthy of the Award. The international jury appreciated the Initiative of the city “In step with the time: Socially-oriented project for adaptation of elderly people to information technology”.

Ceremony of awarding winners will be held on November 28, 2014.
