Happy Anniversary, Nizhny Novgorod!

Today, on August 21, Nizhny Novgorod celebrates its 800th anniversary, since 2019 the city has been a member of the UCLG-Eurasia.

Nizhny Novgorod is the capital of the Volga region and the fifth largest metropolis in Russia, leading its history since the XIII century. The magnificent Old Russian city is located at the meeting point of the Oka and Volga rivers in the central part of the East European Plain, 400 kilometers east of Moscow. Nizhny Novgorod, as the townspeople call it, has preserved the spirit of antiquity even today.

1. The history of the city is so rich that it is impossible to know everything at once. And now we will share with you the most interesting facts about the birthday city that you might not have known about. In Nizhny Novgorod there is a very unusual house that looks "flat"from a certain angle. This unusual illusion disappears if you go around the corner of the building. We are used to standard houses with four walls, each of which has an angle of 90 degrees. The angle of this building in the Upper Furnaces is much smaller, which is why there is a visual deception. The house is located on Kasyanov Street, 5a.



2. The first tram in Russia was launched in Nizhny Novgorod, in 1896. The beginning of this business is connected with the opening of the All-Russian Art, as well as trade and industrial exhibition. Then, at the same time, several owners created four tram systems at once.



3. Not many people know that Nizhny Novgorod was closed from 1959 to 1991. But then it became open to visitors not only to Soviet, but also to foreign citizens.

Currently, it is the capital, which has eleven twin cities, including Minsk, Kharkiv, Suwon and many others.



4. Nizhny Novgorod has the longest Cable car not only in Russia, but also in the whole of Europe. Its length is 3,362 meters. It is noteworthy that 800 meters pass over the water surface. The Nizhny Novgorod "cable car" is also an intercity vehicle connecting Nizhny Novgorod and the city of Bor, which are located on different banks of the Volga.
