On October 6, 2008 World Habitat Day was conducted in Luanda (Angola).
The idea of this day is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.
In its framework the Scroll of Honor Award was presented to the cities whose candidatures were selected as winners in 2008. Today Scroll of Honor is the most prestigious award for cities and human settlements. Launched by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in 1989, it acknowledges the most prominent initiatives of cities, organizations and individuals in the field of shelter provision and improvement of living conditions.
The city of Bugulma ? member of UCLG Euro-Asia ? became a winner of Scroll of Honor Award this year. Bugulma was awarded for implementation of the program ?Pure Water? aimed to improve the water pipe system of the city. The delegation from Bugulma was headed by the Chief of the Executive Committee of Bugulma City Farit Gatin.
Along with Bugulma, the following cities received the award: Nanjing, Shaoxing, and Zhangjiangang (China), Juarez (Mexico), Kigali (Rwanda), as well as the Building and Social Housing Foundation (the United Kingdom).
