The 6th International Municipal Forum of the BRICS countries was held in Moscow on August 27-28.

The Forum became one of the largest international platforms aimed at the development of inter-municipal cooperation, sustainable development, exchange of urban experience, introduction of innovations, etc. An extensive program consisting of 13 blocks was developed for the Forum participants and covered many pressing issues for local and regional governments.

Ilsur Metshin, President of UCLG-Eurasia, delivered a speech at the plenary session of the BRICS Forum in Moscow. He told about the idea of creating the BRICS Association of Cities and Municipalities, the Association itself, and the directions and prospects for further work.

Rasikh Sagitov, Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia, made a report at the panel session “The Great Eurasia Partnership and BRICS+: Strategic Interaction and Prospects for Cooperation”, prepared by the International Union of Non-Governmental Organizations “Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly”. He presented UCLG-Eurasia’s activities, the events held and the upcoming ones, spoke about current trends in developing the international community in general and the global municipal movement in particular.

Rasikh Sagitov also noted that “the potential of cities and local governments to strengthen partnership and cooperation within Greater Eurasia is still far from being fully utilized. This potential is huge. To realize these opportunities, more active and close cooperation of associations of local governments of our Eurasia region is necessary” and that “it is associations, uniting municipalities, that are able to promote efficient forms of cooperation and strengthen ties between cities”.

According to the organizers, the Forum gathered more than 6,000 participants and over 1,1 thousand representatives of foreign countries. 18 representatives of federal agencies, 716 representatives of regions of the Russian Federation and 229 mayors of Russian cities and heads of municipalities participated from Russia.
