The 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) is taking place today in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The Conference aims to integrate land restoration into the broader climate and development agenda, highlighting the critical links between degraded ecosystems, food security and migration pressures.
On Thursday, December 5, the World Economic Forum Session “From Sand to Soil: Nature Positive Approaches to Urban Desertification” was held at COP16. Amgalanbaatar Amartuvshin, Vice-Mayor of Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) participated in the Forum’s session on behalf of UCLG-Eurasia. In his speech on the topic “Nature-Positive Cities”, A. Amartuvshin highlighted current climate challenges in Ulaanbaatar, measures taken by the authorities and key initiatives.
“To highlight that desertification not only happens in warm climate, but in cold climate as well. Even though Mongolia has harsh winters with the weather dropping to -30°, -40°, we are experiencing desertification, too. And this should neither be overlooked nor forgotten”, A. Amartuvshin noted.
In conclusion, A.Amartuvshin said: “Ulaanbaatar envisions a future where sustainable urban development, powered by green energy and modern infrastructure, becomes a norm. ... We invite you to join us in creating a blueprint for sustainability that other cities facing similar challenges can adopt. Together, we can improve the quality of life for our residents and ensure that no community is left behind in the global transition to a sustainable future”.
The next session of the Conference of the Parties will be hosted by Ulaanbaatar.
