20 000 USD for urban innovations

We are pleased to send you a call for interest for the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation. 
Following the proposal by UCLG Co-President Wan Qingliang, the city of Guangzhou is launching the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (abbreviated as Guangzhou Award) jointly with UCLG and Metropolis, in an effort to improve the socio-economic environments in cities and regions, promote sustainability, and hence advance the livelihood of their citizens. Presented biennially, the award will encourage and recognize outstanding innovative projects and practices in the public sector.

The Guangzhou Award aims to:

♦    Highlight exemplary models of innovative practices;

♦    Motivate cities to further promote innovation;

♦    Improve city governance;

♦    Disseminate successful practices for possible replication.

Applicants can submit innovative achievements including but not limited to the following thematic fields:

♦    Public Services: the provision, delivery and outcome of public services;

♦    Organization and Administration: improving transparency, accountability and responsiveness in public services;

♦    Partnership and Citizen Involvement: building participative partnership between government, private sector and civil society;

♦    Smart City: application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to optimize resources, boost efficiency and generate vitality in cities;

♦    Sustainable City: improving the quality of urban life in a sustainable way.

Award will be granted to 5 winners. Each of the winners will be awarded with USD 20,000, apart from a trophy and a certificate.

The Guangzhou Municipal Government provides funding for the award, including prize for winners and managing costs. The host city will also pay for air tickets and accommodation for two members from each winning city for participation to the award ceremony.  

Registration deadline: 31 May 2012

Submission deadline: 31 July 2012

The Award Ceremony is scheduled to take place in November 2012.
