Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin has been elected President of the “United Cities and Local Governments” World Organization. This decision has been made during the meetings of the UCLG World Council that are taking place these days in Barcelona.

Previously it had been reported that President of UCLG Mohamed Boudra announced his resignation at the meeting of the Committee on Statutory Affairs. His resignation is due to the termination of his powers as Mayor of Al Hoceima (Morocco).

“The city is a basis for all transformations, and our objective is to help municipalities to move from challenges to the development of clear solutions, and then to the integration of sustainable development strategies at the local level. UCLG is an organization not for mayors, but for all citizens, for people whose well-being is the focus of all our efforts,” Ilsur Metshin said.

In his address Ilsur Metshin also proposed to provide assistance to small cities in difficult financial situation during the pandemic, and to change the existing system of interaction between cities and regions within UCLG.

It should be noted that for the first time the representative of Eurasia has become head of UCLG. Earlier presidents of UCLG were Mayor of Paris (France) Bertrand Delanoë, Mayor of Istanbul (Turkey) Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of Johannesburg (South Africa) Mpho Parks Tau.
