President of Euro-Asia section of UCLG, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin was elected to the United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities (UNACLA).

    Vice-president of UCLG, President of Euro-Asia section of UCLG, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin was elected to the United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities (UNACLA). The meeting of UNACLA was held on 16 April 2007 in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, in the framework of XXI Session of the Governing Council of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, (UN-HABITAT).
    UNACLA consists of 20 members including mayors of cities and authorities of leading international organizations. The main goal of this Committee is to advice the UN Secretary General at taking global decisions on issues of local governments, development of democracy at sites and decentralization. Committee was established in 2000 taking into account the increasing role of local governments in the implementation of Millennium Development Goals approved by UN.
    Advisory Committee also includes mayors of Paris, Montreal, Vienna, Rome, Barcelona, and Istanbul. Ilsur Metshin has become the first mayor from Russia and CIS countries represented on UNACLA.  Chairman of UNACLA, President of Metropolitan section of UCLG, former mayor of Barcelona Joan Clos proposed Mr. Ilsur Metshin for election to the Committee. This proposal was accepted taking into account the increasing role of the city of Kazan, the headquarters of Euro-Asia section of UCLG, in the world movement of municipal authorities and thanks to successful cooperation with UN in the framework of section activity.
    Ilsur Metshin is included in the group of advisors of UN Secretary General and this is the evidence of recognition of the leading role of Kazan in the world process of strengthening the local governments? significance at taking decisions at UN level, as UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat Anna Tibaijuka reported.
    Secretary General of Euro-Asia section of UCLG Rassikh Sagitov took part in the work of the XXI session of the Governing Council of UN-Habitat and the meeting of UNACLA.
