Kovrov has become a member of UCLG

The city of Kovrov has applied for membership in the Eurasian section of UCLG.

It should be mentioned that the mayor of the city Victor R. Kaurov took part in the Eurasian Cities Forum. He delivered a speech on «Prospects of development of tourism in Kovrov. Situational Analysis» on one of the plenary sessions of the Forum. Moreover, a banner presentation telling about the military glory of Kovrov was made for the forum.

V.R.Kaurov highly appreciated the work of the Forum and said he wanted to be a part of UCLG at his speech during the plenary session. UCLG received an application for membership of Kovrov in the organization immediately after the forum. Decision on the adoption of Kovrov will be taken at the meeting of the Council of the Eurasian section and the city will be the 108th member of the UCLG-Eurasia.

Kovrov is the second largest city in the Vladimir region with the population of almost 150,000 people, it dates back to 1778, with the decree of Catherine II assigning the status of the county town to the village of Kovrovo. But the city has even longer history - the first settlement on the site of the city dates back to the XV century. Today Kovrov is a major industrial and scientific center of Russia, which has many defense enterprises.

To see the city of Kovrov was a pipe dream for many tourists for years. The city remained a “closed” military-industrial center. Today the times have changed ... and “one of the three capitals of arms of Russia”, “The City of Military Glory” Kovrov is waiting for tourists and is working on a promising “Program of development of tourism in the city of Kovrov”. The main purpose of the program is to create conditions for the development of incoming tourism.

It should be noted that Kovrov is located near the cities of the “Golden Ring” (Vladimir, Suzdal), which allows the city to create conditions for receiving transit groups and thus increase the tourist flow.

Currently, branding of Kovrov as an object of tourist attractiveness is seen in two ways.

The first one is successfully being developed. The interactive museum exhibition-workshop “The world of clay toys” has been a real tourist brand of Kovrov since 2006, and won a grant from the Russian President. The Museum of Nature and Ethnography (ecomuseum), which will include the interactive exhibition “The World of the clay toys”, will be opened in Kovrov by its 235^th anniversary in 2013. Suchwise the museum will have a opportunity to receive more tourist groups.

The second area in the sphere of tourist attraction in Kovrov is associated with awarding the city the honorary title of “The City of Military Glory”. Visitors can get acquainted with the enormous collection of weapons by Kovrov designers.
