Nizhny Novgorod has joined the Euro-Asia Section UCLG

Nizhny Novgorod is an amazing city, located in the merge of the two great rivers – the Volga and the Oka. Founded in XIII century, the city still treasures and maintains the antique spirit. Those who have taken a walk in its streets has experienced the transfer into past of centuries ago. The citizens of Nizhny Novgorod have saved many historical and cultural monuments. Among the major sites there are beautiful monasteries, churches and cathedrals.

From 1990s Nizhny Novgorod became the centre for hosting specialized forums and exhibitions at the base of the newly created society “Nizhny fair”. With the foundation of the Privolzhsky federal region in 2000, Nizhny became its centre.

In 2010 with the public participation, the new general development layout was approved and sanctioned. The new concept implies the transfer of the business activities from the overloaded historical centre to the other side of the river (this transfer was already foreseen by the soviet general layouts in 1980s), the development of the metro, express streetcars and extension of the territory.

Nizhny Novgorod is one of the Russian industrial centres, with the leading sectors in machinery building, metal processing and IT.
