Message from Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia

Dear colleagues and friends!

First of all, let me express gratitude for your efforts and decisive actions to combat the spread of the coronavirus infection.

Today, UCLG is celebrating its 16^th anniversary. During these years we have become a worldwide recognized international organization and a key partner of the UN in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at the local level.

Current circumstances are dictating a new reality. According to the instructions of President of UCLG-Eurasia, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin, our Secretariat, following the World Secretariat in Barcelona, has been working remotely since March 23. Since March 31, in many regions a self-isolation regime has been introduced. However, I would like to assure you that we are continuing our active work, and we will share the information on the ongoing activities with you.

Due to the difficult epidemiologic situation, we have made a decision to cancel the learning seminar – the UCLG-Eurasia Retreat that was scheduled for May 2020.

The meeting of the Executive Bureau, which was planned for May 28-29, 2020, in Rome, Italy, will be held on the same date online.

I would like to remind you that heads of Izhevsk, Turkestan, Yekaterinburg, Stavropol, Samara, Kazan, Khujand, Rostov-on-Don, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and Moscow City Duma are members of the Executive Bureu for UCLG-Eurasia. I kindly ask you to envisage the opportunity to take part in the online discussions on May 28-29, 2020. All technical details will be communicated later.

X International Conference of Eurasia World Heritage Cities that was planned to take place on June 26-27, 2020, in Yakutsk, is in question at the moment. This event is most likely to be rescheduled to a later date.

For the time being, there is no information on cancelation or postponement of the UN High-Level Political Forum to be held in New York, USA, on July 7-16, 2020. We will keep you up to date.

I call on you to take part in the initiatives being implemented in absentia. Among them are the following:

─      the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation. Applications should be submitted by July 1, 2020. Each of five winners will receive $20 000.

─      the survey developed by the United Nations and dedicated to how you see the world in 25 years. This survey is available online in the Russian language on the official website of the UN: https://un75.online/?lang=rus.

─      the contest of children’s drawings “Heritage of Eurasia Through Children’s Eyes – 2020. National Costume”. The deadline to submit drawings is May 17, 2020. The detailed information on the participation has been sent earlier by official letters.
