RoigJoseph elected New UCLG Secretary General

On 23 June 2011 the UCLG Executive Bureau meeting in Rabat appointed Josep Roig as UCLG Secretary General following an international recruitment process.

In November 2010, Elizabeth Gateau resigned her position as UCLG Secretary General and the former UCLG chief-financial officer, Mr. Clarence Anthony was appointed Interim Manager of UCLG.

The world contest for the position was announced In December 2010, where 46 specialists from 27 countries took part. The Committee members for Statuary Affairs studied the applicants’ questionnaires and assessed all the candidates. On 14 April 2011 in Mexico, in the session of the Committee the best candidates were shortlisted. Among the first 10 nominees who got the most points the Committee picked up the best 5:

1.   Roig Joseph

2.   Javier Sanchez

3.   Francesc Badia

4.   Christophe Jacquemin

5.   Just Martens

Josep Roig, Secretary General of Metropolis since 2000, has been involved in the Metropolitan Section of UCLG as a founding and active member since 1985. Economist by education, he has worked at the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona in different positions and was Executive Director of the University of Barcelona during the period 1990-1994. Joseph Roig has been actively involved in working with such international organisations like UN–Habitat, World Bank, World Cities Alliance and others.

UCLG President Kadir Topbas, expressed his trust that the Organisation is putting in Mr Roig’s great capacity to carry forward the work of UCLG. At his appointment speech before 216 local government leaders from 40 countries, Mr. Roig expressed his gratitude for the challenging task entrusted to him and the need to strengthen UCLG´s role as network of networks working towards advocacy action and innovation.

Josep Roig will be assuming his new responsibilities upcoming September.
