Eurasia Regional Section of the World organization "United Cities and Local Governments"
On April 6, 2023, the city of Khujand hosted a learning seminar dedicated to the theme “Local Governments and the SDGs”. The event was organized by UCLG-Eurasia with the support of the municipality of Khujand.
The training was attended by staffers of different departments of the municipality. At the beginning the workshop, Bakhtiyor Bokizoda, Deputy Chairman of Khujand, and Rasikh Sagitov, Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia, delivered their welcome addresses.
“The Eurasia Regional Section of the World Organization “United Cities and Local Governments” is dynamically developing its activities and making a contribution to the development in each region of the members of the organization. I can confidently say that this platform will provide us with an opportunity to address many socio-economic issues”, Bakhtiyor Bokizoda highlighted.
Rasikh Sagitov stressed that “in 2017, the Republic of Tajikistan presented its first Voluntary National Review of achieving the SDGs, and this year Tajikistan will submit its second Review to the UN High-level Political Forum. This demonstrates the commitment of the country to implement the 2030 Agenda”.
Tansylu Nurieva, Project Director, introduced the participants of the seminar to the 2030 Agenda, key principles of the SDGs, as well as the notion of voluntary national, subnational and local reviews. Each principle of the SDGs was illustrated with successful urban practices. In addition, it was mentioned that each city can prepare a voluntary local review that enables the municipality to inform about its individual efforts in achieving the SDGs at the local level.
Saida Zagidullina, Development Director, provided an overview of all the SDGs, placing special emphasis on those Goals related to the issue of climate change. The significance of developing climate strategies that are a starting point for carrying out a focused work on adaptation to climate change was underlined.
The program of the workshop builds on the learning modules developed by UCLG, UNDP and UN-Habitat.
Staffers of the municipality took active part in discussions, online-surveys and presented initiatives being implemented by the city of Khujand. It should be noted that, according to the results of the survey, the participants marked Goal 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth” and Goal 9 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” as priority ones.
Rasikh Sagitov concluded the seminar by expressing gratitude to the participants and awarding them certificates.
On the same day, April 6, the meeting of Rasikh Sagitov, Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia, and Firdavs Sharifzoda, Chairman of Khujand, took place. The parties discussed the calendar of upcoming events of UCLG for 2023 and further cooperation of UCLG-Eurasia and Khujand.
