Eurasia Regional Section of the World organization "United Cities and Local Governments"
On May 7, Istanbul hosted the first meeting of the UCLG Committee on Urban Health.
The World organization of UCLG proposed to create the UCLG Committee on Urban Health. The UCLG Executive Bureau approved the proposal to establish such a committee in June 2011 in Rabat. There has been no organized committee or working group dealing specifically with health yet.
The aim of the Committee is to promote the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, as well as to cooperate with the World Health Organization (WHO) and local authorities around the world in order to create healthy cities and provide appropriate living conditions.
In the sessions which took place in Istanbul the issues of cooperation between local authorities and public health services, provision of public health services and organizational issues were discussed, and a plan of further work of the Committee on Urban Health was developed.
The meeting of the Committee was attended by the Mayor of Istanbul, the President of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, the President of UCLG Kadir Topbash, Secretary General of the Middle East Section of UCLG Mehmet Duman, Secretary General of the Eurasian Section of UCLG Rasikh Sagitov, as well as representatives of Istanbul University, the Metropolitan municipality of Istanbul, Harvard School of Public Health and the ISTANBUL Health Enterprises Corporation (SAGLIK A.Ş.) The partners of the Committee are WHO, WHO European Healthy Cities Network, World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA), World Bank or IFC, the EU and other related agencies of the UN system (UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF).
The city of Istanbul was elected the Chairman of the Committee. The cities of Guangzhou, Tehran and Kazan were elected vice-chairmen. Kazan was presented in the committee by the professor, the rector of the Kazan Medical University, chairman of the committee of the Kazan City Duma on Health Alexey S. Sozinov. Moreover, the Eurasian section of UCLG in the Committee is represented by the cities of Cheboksary and Elista.
