Bishkek improves transportation system

 Бишкек улучшает транспортную систему

Municipality of Bishkek signed an agreement with JICA Company on implementation of project “Research on improving urban transport in Bishkek” in February 2011. As part of the project new adaptive traffic lights which switch lights depending on the traffic situation will be installed at a given intersection. The lights are equipped with motion sensors which track the transport situation and organize a “green corridor” for cars on the busiest streets. In addition, the devices can recognize pedestrians who are about to cross the road, and automatically turn the green light on for them.

One of the main objectives of the project is to provide safety of pedestrians. There will be islands of safety on the roads. These islands perform several functions: they allow pedestrians to stop safely at a pedestrian crossing and assess the situation on the road without unnecessary haste, separate lanes more clearly and attract drivers' attention to the crosswalk.

It is planned to apply road markings using thermoplastic in order to improve safety, create more comfortable environment for road users, and increase the traffic capacity of the existing network. Horizontal road marking made of thermoplastic has much longer functional durability than paint.

In addition, a new set of stopping complexes with the use of vandal-proof materials will be installed to the east direction from Chui Avenue.

It is planned to complete the pilot project in mid-September of this year.
