Yekaterinburg is the third in Russia in terms of consular posts and foreign diplomats

Coordination Council of Strategic Development of Ekaterinburg under the chairmanship of the Head of administration of the city Alexander Jacob considered a strategic project “Ekaterinburg - the center of international relations” on Tuesday, July 10, 2012.

The chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Administration of Ekaterinburg Svetlana Garipova told about successes and the need to continue the project.

The strategic project “Ekaterinburg - the center of international relations” is included in the program “Ekaterinburg - international center of business communications”. During the 6 years of the project the number of business trips to Yekaterinburg has increased by 58.6%, and the number of visits of diplomatic missions - by 102.8%. As noted by Svetlana Garipova, such high rates show a steady interest of the business community to the capital of the Ural.

Every year about 20 foreign firms open in Yekaterinburg. In particular, at the end of 2011, 336 representative offices of foreign companies operated in the city, which is 33.8% higher than in 2006. In 2011, Ekaterinburg was visited on “private business” by 135 000 foreign citizens and 6634 tourists. Over the last 4 years (starting from 2008) the number of foreign students coming to Ekaterinburg for education has increased as well. In 2011, there were 2920 students, which is 6.8 times more than in 2008.

Ekaterinburg has extensive external relations. At the beginning of 2012 there were 22 consular offices in the city. Thus, Yekaterinburg is the third after Moscow and St. Petersburg on the number of accredited consular posts and foreign diplomats.

It is expected that, in line with the dynamics of the strategic project, the number of foreign companies and consulates in Yekaterinburg will increase significantly by 2020. The number of big conference events, business missions, official visits and diplomatic missions will increase as well,.

The members of the Coordination Council decided to submit the draft of “Ekaterinburg - the center of international relations” to the consideration of the Programme Council.
