Innovative Water Treatment Technologies in Moscow

A Moscow project to create innovative technologies for the complete cycle of wastewater treatment in megacities was awarded a prize of the Russian Government. The initiative was developed over 20 years by employees of the JSC “Mosvodokanal”, the research and production association “Laboratory of Pulse Technology” and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Unique solutions were implemented at the Russia’s largest Lyubertsy treatment facilities with the capacity of three million cubic meters per day. This allowed to improve environmental safety and eliminate pollution in the Moscow region. Thanks to this development, the quality of life of millions of residents of the capital and the Moscow region has improved, as chemical and bacterial contamination of water and soil is completely eliminated.

Wastewater treatment technologies comprise several stages, including ultraviolet disinfection. Thanks to the reconstruction of the Lyubertsy treatment facilities, the water returned to nature is cleaner than the river water by many key indicators. In addition, zero-waste production has been introduced: even today, part of the sludge generated in the wastewater treatment process is recycled into solid biofuel.
