HIV Preventive Measures Being Taken in Astana

Какие меры по профилактике ВИЧ принимают в Астане

December 1 is World AIDS Day. On this occasion, Astana has held events to raise public awareness about HIV infection and summarized the results of the work plan in this direction.

Over the last 5 years, AIDS-related mortality in Astana has almost halved. Positive results have been achieved due to the allocation of the State Social Order and preventive measures taken by the Astana Municipality:

- a 6,5-fold increase in the systematic coverage of key population groups by prevention programs;

- early detection of HIV infection in key population groups and timely registration;

- coverage of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Astana has increased by more than 5 times.

PrEP is the latest efficient way, introduced in Kazakhstan in 2022, to prevent HIV transmission. PrEP is recommended for people with a high risk of infection. Today, this is a breakthrough in HIV prevention, and with its help new cases of infection can be prevented.

Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is an important and integral part of comprehensive HIV care. Cases of HIV with vertical transmission have not been registered in the city with the introduction of highly effective antiretroviral therapy in the last 3-4 years.

It should be noted that the city’s efforts in this area directly contribute to the achievement of the UN SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. In particular, its objectives such as: end the epidemic of AIDS by 2030, combat communicable diseases, achieve universal health coverage, ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services and others.
