he first UN-Habitat Assembly, that took place on May 27-28 in the capital of Kenya, the city of Nairobi, chose Yekaterinburg as the host city of World Cities Day. Besides, the International Forum of High-rise and Special Constructions 100+ Forum Russia will be dedicated to World Cities Day.

“This is not only a conscious and serious initiative of Yekaterinburg and our region, but the way to direct international cooperation with other cities, whose best experience we would adopt. The major world urban event will allow Yekaterinburg to attract promising projects aimed at development of the city, and to find new partners,” - Aleksandr Vysokinskii, Mayor of Yekaterinburg, highlighted.

World Cities Day is organized in Russia for the second time. For the first time it was held in Kazan in 2006 with organizational support of the Eurasia section of UCLG.

Note:

World Cities Day was established on December 27, 2013 by the UN General Assembly. Within the framework of the event local, regional and national governments and partners organize on various global platforms activities devoted to sustainable urban development, and then hold a final meeting. A host city develops proposals concerning formats and a subtheme of the meeting. For instance, the previous themes were “Leading Urban Transformations” in Shanghai, “Designed to live together” in Milan, “Building Sustainable and Resilient Cities” in Liverpool. The subtheme of Yekaterinburg relates to innovative development. The final event of World Cities Day, as a rule, includes forum and celebrations.

UN-Habitat is the United Nations programme, coordinating the work on development of rural settlements and focusing on the two priority areas: to provide adequate housing for all and to promote sustainable urban development. UN-Habitat was established in 1978. Its headquarters is located in Nairobi.
