The Congress in Yakutia is a must-visit!

The Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) together with the Eurasia Section of the World Organization «United Cities and Local Governments» invite you to participate in the VIII Eurasia Local Governments Congress. The event will take place on June 24-25, 2021 in the city of Yakutsk and will bring together mayors and representatives of local and regional governments, as well as international organizations.

The Congress sessions are united under the general theme «Healthy Dialogue for Sustainable Development». The eponymous plenary session will bring together representatives of local, regional and national governments to discuss cooperation in the health sector.

An important topic for discussion will be urban resilience, which is the ability of a city to withstand threats and quickly eliminate their consequences. Yakutsk is a pilot city of the UN-Habitat City Resilience Profiling Program. Representatives of the UCLG World Organization and UN-Habitat will introduce participants to the topic of resilience and present the positive experience of Yakutsk in this area.

It is worth noting that Yakutia is acutely aware of the consequences of the glaciers melting. Within the framework of the Congress, a roundtable aimed at drawing attention to the problem of climate change and finding joint actions to solve it will be held.

The waste disposal problem and landfills overflowing poses a threat to the environment and human health. Waste management will be the topic of one of the roundtables of the Congress. The best practices of Eurasia and world cities will be presented to participants. An open discussion on the topic will be aimed at elaborating recommendations within the mandate of local and regional governments to solve the problem of waste recycling.

An interesting event is intended to be a virtual exhibition on the theme «Cultural Heritage of Eurasia Cities», where municipalities will be able to present their rich culture.

The key event of the Congress will be the General Assembly of the UCLG Eurasia Section. The agenda includes discussion of the results of the activities, the definition of the plan of key programs and activities, the election of the management staff of the department for 2021-2024. Discussions are also planned on the creation of local self-government associations, the involvement of local governments in the process of preparing Voluntary National Reviews on the SDGs, and the expansion of international cooperation of Eurasia cities.

The Eurasia Local Governments Congress will be held in a hybrid format, i.e. participants can choose to participate live or connect via Zoom. Face-to-face participation will have a number of advantages in the form of live communication, establishing business contacts and visiting one of the most unique regions of the world.

Yakutia is a land of dense forests of the taiga and vast expanses of the tundra, harsh mountain ranges and boundless icy Arctic distance, original culture and kind-hearted people. In winter, there is crackling Arctic frosts, in summer it can be hot, like in resort cities.

A trip to Yakutia is a unique opportunity to:
