Moscow Has Presented Climate Achievements at the UN Conference in Dubai

Москва представила климатические достижения на конференции ООН в Дубае

A delegation from Moscow has taken part in the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai.

During the event, Yulia Urozhaeva, Head of the Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection of Moscow, has reported that CO2 emissions in the capital have been reduced by 25%.

Moscow has presented the Conference participants a climate adaptation plan, which affects all areas of the city economy and linked areas related to the development of health care and the preservation of green areas. Almost 50% of the city's territories are green spaces, thanks to which the average temperature is also reduced during heat waves. The plan will allow to further reduce CO2 emissions and improve environment, including through the usage of the latest technologies.

The international ranking “Climate Agenda of the World's Cities”, developed and presented at COP28 by Moscow, deserves special attention. The research is conducted in 5 key areas of the climate agenda: energy production and consumption, transportation system, green spaces and waste management system. Moscow is among the top five leaders along with London, Paris, Berlin and ranks fourth, ahead of such major cities as Tokyo, New York, Beijing and Seoul.

An important difference of the presented research from similar projects is the high share of data for the city, rather than for the country, as well as the analysis not by emission volumes, but by spheres of urban life, which have the greatest impact on them. At the same time, not only the current state, but the prospects of cities are assessed as well.

The research complies with international climate standards and approaches and is transparent and illustrative, as the methodology and all sources of information are open. Plans include the development of an online mechanism for self-assessment of other cities, as well as researches of the largest cities of the Russian Federation, taking into account the peculiarities of the country.

The analytical report and the research methodology can be viewed on the website.
