From 11 to 13 April the Secretary General of UCLG Eurasia Rasikh Sagitov paid a working visit to Bishkek (the Kyrgyz Republic), where he met with the vice-mayor Viktoriya Mozgacheva and the director of the Local Self-governments Union of the Kyrgyz Republic Bekturgan Orozbaev.
International activity of Bishkek is conducted within a wide enough geography. For the years of its independence, Bishkek established sister-city and partner-city relations with 42 cities from the countries of near and far abroad. There is a cooperation established and conducted with a number of international organizations, public associations, foundations, large companies. A quality increase of the international relations with foreign cities and international organizations is planned, namely establishing of new contacts and deepening of the existing ones.
The main topic of the meetings was the discussion on the organisation of training seminars by UCLG Eurasia on the Sustainable development goals for the staff of the Bishkek city hall (18-19 May) and for the members of the Local Self-governments Union of the Kyrgyz Republic (20 May). During the seminar, the participants will be introduced to the concept of “localisation of the Sustainable development goals” and the principles underpinned by it, and also to the role of local authorities in the achievement of these broad objectives.
The seminar program is based on training modules developed by the World UCLG organization, the United Nations Development Programme and the UN-HABITAT. As a result, all the participants will be awarded certificates.
R.K. Sagitov also proposed to hold a Subnational review of the Union of Municipalities of Kyrgyzstan.
The parties discussed a wide range of issues in the area of the cooperation and further engagement of Bishkek and the Kyrgyz Republic municipalities with UCLG Eurasia. In addition, participation in the upcoming UCLG 7th World Congress in Daejeon (South Korea) and ensuring full support for initiatives of the UCLG Eurasia leadership at this congress were discussed.
Meetings of the General Assembly and the World Council of the UCLG will be held at this congress. New members of the World Council and the Presidency will be elected for 2022-2025, and the venue of the next World Congress will be determined. Within the framework of the congress in Daejeon a meeting of UCLG Eurasia Council will be held as well.
