Omsk Shares Its Experience. Achieving SDG

Evgenia Uvarkina, Mayor of Lipetsk, paid a working visit to Omsk. The main purpose of her visit was to familiarize herself with the work of the Omsk office of “Rosvodokanal”. The Mayor of Lipetsk visited the production base of the enterprise, where she was informed about the stages of modernization of the municipal wastewater treatment system and was shown a unique installation for catalytic incineration of the sewage sludge.

“[...] “OmskVodokanal” is one of the flagships of the industry, so we decided to come here. I can say that Omsk practices are applicable in our conditions, they are economically feasible and give good results; we will definitely use this experience”, said Evgenia Uvarkina.

Sergey Shelest, Mayor of Omsk, who is well acquainted with this issue, supported his colleague in her willingness to understand it thoroughly.

“[...] We have indeed developed and implemented a unique technology for catalytic incineration of sludge. The project was implemented from scratch together with the Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and has proved its efficiency during its operation”.

The commissioned thermocatalytic oxidation module of the sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants is designed for utilization of the sewage sludge by deep oxidation in a fluidized bed consisting of a mixture of inert material and catalyst. The ash generated as a result of sludge oxidation can be used in the production of construction materials. This technology is an innovative development of Russian scientists, and the realization of this facility is aimed at preserving the ecology of the city of millions of people and safe utilization of the sewage sludge.

The practices presented above fulfill an important role in addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 6: Ensure access to water and sanitation for all and specifically target 6.3.
