On October 25-28, 2023, the city of Konya (Türkiye) will host the UCLG World Council. This is a principal policy-making body of the World Organization convened once a year to define the UCLG’s work plan for the forthcoming year.
The key issue to be considered will be the approval of the candidacy of Uğur İbrahim Altay, Mayor of Konya, for the post of the UCLG President. Besides, a new composition of the organization’s policy councils is planned to be elected. There are five councils, each responsible for one of the areas of work.
The event will include meetings of UCLG-Eurasia, namely the extraordinary General Assembly and the Council meeting. It is planned to discuss the improvement of the format of work in accordance with the current international situation.
The programme comprises cultural sightseeing. Konya is an ancient city with the architecture of the Seljuk era, old mosques and madrasas. The vicinities were inhabited in the Neolithic era. Not far is the ancient settlement of Çatalhöyük founded about 10,000 years ago and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The population is 2,230,000 people.
