THE UCLG-MEWA RETREAT'23 IN ISTANBUL

From 19 to 21 December 2023, the city of Istanbul (Türkiye) hosted the UCLG-MEWA Retreat under the theme “Redefining Urban Horizons”. The event was attended by staffers, members and partners of the regional section.

The first day of the Retreat was dedicated to the discussion of strengthening partnerships and regional insights on addressing local challenges by local and regional governments of the MEWA region. As part of the first thematic session, Tansylu Nurieva, Learning and Research Programs Coordinator of UCLG-Eurasia, told that the Eurasia Section and UCLG-MEWA have experience in conducting the Research and Ranking of Municipalities' International Activity that were participated by the cities of the Eurasia and MEWA regions in 2019”. In addition, Tansylu Nurieva presented the participants the Eurasia Retreat that took place in Kazan in May 2023, as well as learning seminars on the SDGs organized by UCLG-Eurasia for municipalities of the Eurasia region.

The second day of the Retreat included the UCLG-MEWA consultation meeting, the sessions on the preparation of VLRs and VSRs, participatory approach to the local decision-making, and ways of ensuring climate-resilient infrastructure.

During the last day of the event, the strategic priorirites of UCLG-MEWA were defined, and participants were presented the plan and programs for 2024.

Among the participants of the Retreat were representatives of such organizations as the Asian Mayors Forum, UNDRR, UNDP, etc.
